Oysters 101 @ Oyster House Philadephia, PA

This past Saturday I attended Oysters 101 at Oyster House in Philadelphia.

I persuaded my friend Elena to attend as my usual oyster eating companion, Andrew, unfortunately had a surprise work engagement at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

The class was held in the restaurant in the midst of its busy lunch hour. I could not help but admire their lovely collection of oyster plates.

Daniel, our knowledgeable oyster professor, talked to us about oyster anatomy and history.

We were then instructed in the art of oyster shucking. I of course volunteered but was too excited to remember to get a photo of my first shuck. Boy did I enjoy the fruits of my labor and I made sure to bring the shell home as a souvenir! This classmate did an excellent job of shucking his oyster.

We then enjoyed some oysters: six Cape Salts (NJ) [on the right in photo below] with one of each of the following [on the left in photo below]: Chincoteague (VA), Blue Point (LI, NY), Caraquet (New Brunswick), Fanny Bay (Vancover), and Kumamoto (US Pacific Coast).

As you can see from the photo the drink pairings were numerous. We started out with a Bloody Mary (always good with any seafood) and were then given some sparkling wine (the Kumamto was nice with the sparking), Chablis, Yards Love Stout (wonderfully smooth read about it here), a Miller Gin Martini (delicious with the Fanny Bay!) and a Campari cocktail.

I was very, very, happy about my oysters!

Oysters 101 will be held again on February 9th but word on the street is that the class is sold out.  Try to get on the waiting list or sign up for Oyster House's Twitter, Facebook, and emails to be sure you hear about the 2014 classes!
